Would you kill for honour ?

Honour and Kill. Does these words mean anything to u ?

I am sure that you are familiar with these words.

Honour –   Great Respect or Esteem

Killing- You know, pew pew pew ! You are dead ! That kinda thing. ( Yes, I have a weird juvenile sense of humour )

Two words which are poles apart. But do these words fit perfectly together ?

In one country I know of, Yes.

Welcome to India ! The land of spicy food, yoga, meditation, The Taj Mahal, celebrations, hollywood dancing, never ending festivals, romantic movies, a thousand languages, beautiful landscapes, ME and yes, Apu from Simpsons. ( Me and Apu are pals . Long story, tell ya guys some other time).

Anywhoo,

Honour killing is one of the major evils that still exists in our world. We all are not aware of it or is ignorant of it, coz it does not affect us in our day to day lives. It’ s not the typical, ‘I don’t have avacado for my toast’ kinda thing. More like, Someone I love is gonna kill me coz I fell in love. ( I know, I know, It’s confusing. You will get it in a second .)

So what excatly is honour killing ?

An honor killing or a shame killing is the homicide a member of a family, due to the perpetrators’ belief that the victim has brought shame or dishonour upon the family, or has violated the principles of a community or a religion, usually for reasons such as refusing to enter an arranged marriage or being in a relationship that is disapproved by their family, having se outside marriage, becoming the victim of rape, dressing in ways which are deemed inappropriate, engaging in non-heterosexual relations or renouncing a faith. ( that’s the wikipedia definition ).

That is, your own mother, father or your sibling would kill you for falling in love with someone, having sexual intercourse with your boyfriend / girlfriend or even for getting raped. Is that fair ? NO. A big fat NO.

But does it happen ?  Yes. Does it happen often ? Another big fat YES.

IN 2016, a newspaper reported that honour killing in India surged up to 800%. 251 cases were reported in 2015. These were the reported cases. Mostly cases are not reported. Most of the cases which make it to the police station, end up in a dead rusty pile of trash where the ‘investigation’ is prolonged forever or the culprit spends a few years in jail or no jail time at all. India does not have a seperate category of punishment for honour killing. They are just considered as normal murders and when the relatives of the victim themselves does not want any investigation, what is the police gonna do ? If only, the poor dead girl/guy could raise up from their grave and answer the questions by the police.

The major reason for these killings is just one tiny thing : CONSERVATIVE MIND.

The conservative mind of people who assume that their  son/ daughter loving someone could bring upon so called shame to their family.

That dumb mind which will tell them to kill the only daughter they have because she was raped.

It’s heartbreaking.

If you are thinking if I  just came to know about this today ?

No, I did not come to know about this today. But I read today that the youngest victim of honour killing is a 13 year old girl. 13. The age when you are deciding which Jonas brother you like the most. By the way, if  you are wondering which Jonas brother you like the best, don’t bother, they all suck ( though Nick has dreamy eyes , not that I would know anything about it.).

Honour killing is not only a problem in India or Pakistan. We can see cases of honour killing in Turkey, UK and even in the US.

What can we do about it?

Educate.

We can make people understand that people matter more than honour and society.

We can make them understand that happiness of our kids or siblings matter.

Lives matter.

Let people live their lives in peace.

We live in a wacky world. A world where honour killing and orgies exist in perfect harmony. A world where you fight with your parents coz they ask you to settle down or to introduce them to your girlfriend/boyfriend, while people are getting killed for loving someone.

We need to know about this. We need to be aware.

So, I think we all need to take a moment and understand the perfect lives we have and appreciate every moment of it.

Ok. I am gonna go back to cursing my stupid brain for forgetting avo for my toast.
